Temple, The Cultured Cup

This coffee house, this Cultured Cup of organic coffee and tea, embodies the soul of a good book, literally the former Levinson's Bookstore. It is a temple, a story, an ode to simplicity, service, and openness. Each cup is inspired for the serious drinker, the aficianado, the coffee or tea connoisseur. Temple is where those who love their drinks come to worship.

From here you can transport yourself anywhere in good taste. Create your own story on the pulse of Downtown. Your presence makes this a sacred and organic space for writing, studying, meeting, and being.

Sacred coffee and other tastings will be held on Second Saturdays. Take your organic and fair trade coffee home with you by the pound.

Enter the Temple 365 days per year from 6a.m.-10 p.m. The people behind the counter are obsessed with making each of your visits a true experience.

My ONLY place of worship

by Daisy, Sunday 14 of June, 2009 (18:46:55)

Definitely! I love this place. There's nothing like temple coffee. The taste the texture the aroma... I just can't get enough of it. Sometimes I go there twice a day! The staff is great and they seem to know everyone's usual. It's just an uplifitng experience very time I go there. :)

I work only a block down from them and if I see co-workers is the elevator with a Starbucks cup I tell them they need to go there instead. Some of them actually did and keep going there!

A great place but....

by kh_475, Thursday 19 of February, 2009 (18:27:04)

I definitely think that Temple has the best coffee in town and I always enjoy myself when I go. That being said I think they take the whole coffee thing too far. I mean $35+ for a pound of coffee-come on. I asked them to make me a cup of the most expensive coffee they had and I'm sorry, it tasted like coffee to me.

Worship of the bean

by Meg J, Tuesday 11 of November, 2008 (12:32:55)

I can't say enough good things about this coffee house. While it's somewhat awkward to tell people you're 'going to Temple' ("Wow, what religion are you?"), this is a fantastic place to kneel at the altar of Caffeine and express your abject devotion to its mystically rejuvenating properties.

I know nothing about coffee, and my out-of-town sister is a coffee snob the way other people are wine snobs. Fortunately for me, the people at Temple know their stuff, and thus are tremendously helpful in procuring beans for the sister. I can squint at a paper she's written out, tell the baristas, "Uh, I need some coffee that's low acid and full body with fruity overtones and a nutty, chocolate finish," and they know what I'm talking about even though I clearly don't. The baristas nod approvingly and show me several bags of beans from countries I may or may not be able to locate on a map, I buy one, and to this date my coffee-snob sister has not once been disappointed.

But wait, there's more! Not only do they make great coffee here, they also excel at tea, which is an alarmingly rare trait in most coffee places. Not a teabag in sight at Temple, no, here it's loose-leaf so the tea leaves can frolic freely in the teapot. They even give you a little strainer. Tip: Do not forget to use the strainer because you're used to places offering only captive teabag tea. Loose leaf tea is far less lovely when you're trying to avoid eating it.

The atmosphere is quiet, comfortable, and pleasant, decorated in a way that's pleasing even to the sort of people who use terms like 'gestalt' and 'aesthetic organization' in everyday conversation. The air is thick with free wifi and the smell of quality coffee, and this place will always be something I consider a treat and an escape.

best coffee downtown

by sciv, Thursday 30 of October, 2008 (19:05:49)

I always come to Temple when I want a tasty and not overly sweet white mocha. The wifi and quiet atmosphere also makes it one of my favourite study spots. Blows Starbucks and Peet's out of the water, plus the french press is amazing.

Great Tea

by Obscure, Saturday 18 of October, 2008 (16:09:01)
I go to Temple for the atmosphere, and great selection of teas. I’m actually quite partial the their black teas. Everything is served promptly, and without hassle. This is a great place to come after seeing a movie at the Crest. Temple will have just the thing to warm your bones on a cool night. You know that awesome cozy feeling you get from a full-body stretch when you wake up from a great night’s sleep? Yeah, it’s like that.

Nice vibe...

Temple not only has a great atmosphere for studying, reading, writing, or chatting, but the staff is amazing. If you go in a few times they will remember you and your drink. Great attention to detailing when it comes to the art of espresso. They also have a nice selection of teas to choose from. I suggest this place if you would like a great place to go and relax or study!

Good coffee, good atmosphere

by Bridget, Saturday 23 of August, 2008 (13:02:05)

This place has really good coffee. I normally bring in my own coffee cup and they will fill it up for me for $2. They seem very environmentally friendly too. There is no garbage, but a recycle bin and if you drink your coffee there, they bring it to you in a big cup that they can wash so there is no waste. Not as busy as Starbucks, but I think that is a good thing. Very quick and friendly service too

What I've been looking for...

Temple is the place to hang out downtown!

by lofters, Thursday 01 of May, 2008 (05:11:16)

This is a great place to kick back, read a book, the paper or work on your PC if you can get a place to sit.  Ther fair trade coffee and tea choices are great, very friendly staff.

Pretty Much Gets a Plus

by Rags, Wednesday 09 of April, 2008 (03:30:35)

Staff at Temple - very friendly = APPRECIATED!

Espresso & coffee drinks & hot chocolate - *meh* For the prices, could be better.  The drinks LOOK pretty, but a matching quality of taste would be A+.

Environment - wonderful!  More seating would be super.

mmm....

I'm new to the area & read about Temple in Midtown magazine. I'm a big fan of tea, my boyfriend coffee, so I got the Earl Grey and he tried the capp. We each thoroughly enjoyed our drinks & the service was cool (they deliver to your table, so no need to fear the awkward spill-zone between the bar and your seat).  The only downside to the experience was that most of the tables were occupied by people zoning out in front of laptops. Where's the fun in that?

Going to Temple

by kelly_c, Friday 28 of March, 2008 (15:43:47)

For a few years now almost every Friday night my husband goes to Temple. Many of our family members thought he had become devote and applauded his tenacity. What he actually meant was he was going to the coffee temple, downtown. In many ways, it was still a pilgrimage. These people know their caffiene. The origins, the style, the flavor … you need only ask to get an education on what goes into your cup. In addition, the wifi makes it a great place to work.

Temple Coffee

Simply walking by the quaint coffee shop on 10th St. next to the alley between J and K, Temple Coffee’s rich aroma fills your nose and you can’t help but feel invited inside.  Once inside, the art that adorns the baby blue walls intrigues you to walk further inside this Eastern Euro-style building and have a taste of what your nose has been dying to try.

I order my latte, and sit down with a friend to do a little online research.  This place not only has great, flavorful coffee but has tiny nooks where you can curl up with a book and enjoy the afternoon.

Go to Temple Coffee today, one of Sacramento’s best coffee joints around.

This is definitely a coffee house for the discerning palate. I believe all of the coffees are roasted to an American roast which is a little lighter than most of the competition's. This preserves the distinct flavors of particular varietals and keeps a bit more of a caffeinated kick. If you happen to order a cappuccino, make sure to inquire about their alternative espresso, Sean usually features at least two. Those seeking a traditional cup of joe might be a little put off initially, but rest assured this is some of the finest mud in town. Embrace the new flavors that can be tasted in your coffee when the beans aren't burnt, and I'm sure your palate will soon be pleased. If your feeling adventurous, check out the specialty drink list-there are some real gems.

Temple is located in a great spot (an old bookshop) right off K street, in downtown. Truly great coffee, enough to satisfy any coffee lover, and delight any newbies. This coffee will make you ditch any chain store coffee. They also have really unique options from around the world, including Thai and Vietnamese coffee. Good scones, when you can get them, but they tend to go fast. They have free wifi, and lots of space, so its also great place to do work. And best of all they are open until 11 pm, (one of the only places open late downtown) so you can get a cup, after work, after dinner, or even after a night on the town.
delicious! Furl this! digg this! stumbleupon this!
